I've moved to Hong Kong a couple of years ago to attend a "higher education insistution". I know what all these noobs will be wanting to say, those noobs that actually like or even LOVE this place is "Why don't you leave la?". I've read and heard this response from so many people who voiced their opinion on this subject on forums online and this response just makes me mad. It makes me mad because, it not only reflects the attitude and culture I hate so much but also the fact that not everybody CAN just leave!
There are certain things one can read up on before relocating somewhere but certain, social aspects are often either too dynamic or vague to actually put in some sort of article. Actually I don't know why I can't find inforamtion online on what I am now writing about. Well this is what I'm doing here and I hope for everyone who is thinking about moving to Hong Kong to have a chance to read this BEFORE they decide to come here, hate it, are obliged to stay for a while because of a job or education program, and WORST of ALL to hear "Why don't you leave la?" when you CAN'T!!!
Alright, so much for the intro, I'm not quite sure where to start so I just made a simple list of things that immediately popped into my head. NO, it's not just me who thinks this, there are tons of other people I talked to this about and they all agreed, so screw you whoever disagrees with this BECAUSE it's not just me (maybe later I'll install one of those voting thingies to prove my point and YES we'll seperate the votes from people from Hong Kong and elsewhere, I will explain why this would be the case, later).
These are not (yet) in order of crappyness so feel free to judge which one you most agree on or find most terrible therefore feel sorry for the people that live here:
Guess how much the rent is for a small apartment per month. Let's say it is not right in the CBD and not even on the Island which is the most expensive. And let's say it is small, because what Westerners call small is called HUGE here.

Granted, other metropolises are expensive too, NYC, London but at least they don't have all this other crap listed below which would make the price bearable.

I think wah has a point. Everyone is alloed to have their own opinion. I have been to Hong Kong a plenty of times and I think that your blog is driven by your unfavouable experiences. I have to point out that there are so many things of Hong Kong that you have failed to mention/experience and as a result you make crude assumptions. Hong Kong has a lot to offer for all kinds of cultre. Although you are right in stating that generally speaking the culture leads to different lifestyles/types of women, etc you have negated the fact that there are a lot of women with which you can have an intellectual conversation with and don't need money to attract. The Western way of thinking supports the idea of going to a lot of bars and clubs andhooking up with women however you seem to have limited yourself to this. You should try other formsof social interactions. On a general note you have failed at exploring the various levels of social interactions in Hong Kong and let a different culture negatively influence your opinion of Hong Kong.

I and many others agree with you. HK's biggest problem is it's people and their attitudes. They proclaim themselves fair and intelligent. In reality they are mostly selfish,discriminating,arrogant,and downright ignorant. They have been mentally submitted by the Europeans and do not even realize it.Their culture is materialistic to the extreme.They judge people by wealth.To them, wealthy somehow equals smart and clever. They have very little idea of life in low-class to middle-class Urban America or other Western countries. They also like to claim "tradition" when it suits them, but in fact most HK Chinese live far outside of their ancestors traditions and true hospitable ways.
I moved to Hong Kong more than 2 years ago from California and am still recovering from cultural shock. I was actually born in SH, China, so you'd think I'd get used to the "hospitality" here. However, HK claims to be an international city, so why am I so shocked by bad customer service and rude people?! At least when I go to other places in Asia, I don't have to pay NY prices to get third world country deals. All Wah talked about was if you had enough money to spend then you wouldn't complain, but is it money well spent? If it's "face" that HK locals are trying to buy, they've already lost most of it when they sell their integrity and pride for cheap. I understand HK is competitive, but when you have to sell your soul to make a buck, it's sad.

Well, I live in Hong Kong and i love it.
Yes the rent is expensive, but there are so many things you are missing out on.
In Hong Kong there are so many different cultures and nationalities that in the end i don't get what you mean by "hongkongers are arrogant". There will always be arrogant idiots every place you go to, so i find it quite stereotypical to say that HongKongers are arrogant.
But the thing I love the most about Hong Kong is that it is an exciting city. Its full of life and you can find all sorts of shops in Hong Kong. There is so much diversity and so many things to do.
You can stay in the city, or climb the mountains, or even go to one of it's little Islands on a day trip. Hong Kong is fun, and yes it is capitalist, yes some Hong Kongers are arrogant, yes the rent is expensive but i think you are forgetting all the good things about Hong Kong. There will always be good things and bad things about it, and no matter how much you complain there isn't much you can do about.
About some things some of you said:
- The spitting. I've personally always been kind of disgusted by the spitting but in Chinese culture it isn't considered rude. So for some Hong Kongers spitting is quite normal.
- the education. Yes it is true that many chinese parents push their kids to study hard but it is because they care about them. They want their child to have the best education possible and i don't think that only chinese parents are like that.
- As a matter of fact, Hong Kong is considered the place where you can get the best cantonese food. I am not chinese but i love the fact that there are so many little noodle shops in Hong Kong. Also I love dim sum, and the dim sum here is really good (in general). And even if you don't like chinese food, there are many different types of restaurants to go to.
- the air pollution. Yes it's bad. I completely aggree with you guys.

I also say that the first problem of Hong Kong is that workers have very shitty rights, everyone is always working; we shouldn’t call work what people have here, but hell.
Working daily 12 hours without any extra benefits for nocturnal work, one week vacation per year and no weekends; they have sometimes less than 3 days per month to have a rest. Well of course all the rich pigs advertise in this city of the neon lights because they feed on the ignorance and good attitude that the simple minded Hong Kong workers have.
